My Story

We all have a story. Our stories can drive us towards a purpose, passion, or calling in life. As medical providers, our personal health stories with self or family members can elevate our level of compassion along with an eagerness to help those who have suffered with the same health issues.

My story with Mold Sickness started four years ago when my husband started having bazar, transient symptoms that would come and go; symptoms lasting anywhere from two weeks to years. Symptoms like: left sided weakness, icepick headaches, sometimes up to five in a row, ten times a day. One time it was a severe, sudden onset stutter with a numbness and bruised sensation on his scalp.

He lost 40% of his peripheral vision in the left eye and experienced daily brain fog, severe fatigue, anxiety, and insomnia. He had a chronic cough with shortness of breath and was diagnosed with COPD even though he had never been a smoker. He would present with strange rashes on his chest, arms, hands, and legs along with tender bumps. As time went on, he became socially withdrawn and experienced a drunk-like stupor most of the day. He went from running marathons to requiring reminders to brush his teeth, change his clothes, and take a shower.

During the first two years of these transient symptoms he proceeded to seek help from our primary care doctor, two different neurologists, including a neuropsychiatrist because they all thought he must be depressed or psychotic, three ophthalmologists with two retina specialists, and an ear, nose, and throat specialist. They ruled out all the serious problems like stroke, TIAs, MS, brain tumors, or ALS, but still had no answers or recommendations for treatment other than antidepressants, inhalers, and migraine medicines.

During those first two years, I began testing and treating him as I would my own Functional Medicine clients. Within a few months he began to improve with lessening in the severity of the symptoms but were still there. In the Spring of 2015, I attended a conference on Chronic Inflammation and it was there I learned about Mold Sickness and the devastating effects on the body. Upon returning home, appropriate testing showed he was positive for symptoms associated with mold exposure and Lyme disease. Specific treatments for those were started immediately.

His improvements continue to this day and I can honestly say he is back 95%. Dave has currently started training for a half-marathon.
